Severus Snape - is he evil or not ?

I've been thinking....
Many HP fans ( and other people ) think that Snape is evil. Is he ?
Alright than. Let's think about it for a while.

What makes people thinking that he is evil ?

1. He was a Death Eater .
2. He hates Harry Potter.
3. He is sarcastic and ironic.
4. During his being a Head of Slytherin he always prefferred Slytherin than other pupils.
5. He behaves like "big bat" wonderring around Hogwarts.
6. He was the one who had told The Dark Lord about the Prophesy.
7. He (in Spinners End - HBP BOOK 6) agrees to be bound by Unbreakable Vow.
8. He kills Dumbledore and escapes.

( If you know any more reasons let me know ;-) )

Why I do think he is not evil...

1. He was a Death Eather but he turned to the Good Side and for many years he worked in The Order Of The Phoenix.
2. Dumbledore always says that he fully trusts Snape.
3. He had to learn Oclumency and become the best in it. Is it so difficult to understand that it had change him and he can not be open to people .
4. His memorries of what had happen at school and what he had done as a Death Eater makes him regreat it. No suprise he is sad , ironic and sarcastic - it's a good defence.
5. Everytime there is posibility that any pupil could be in danger , he defends pupils. ( even if he doesn't like the child )
6. Harry is mostly mistaken about Snape. We can see it in every book.
7. He works for the Order as a spy. He had to bound himself into Unbreakable Vow because other Death Eaters wouldn't belive him. Another think is that he is probably Dracos godfather so there is no suprise he wants to safe Draco from death or something worst - become real follower of The Dark Lord.
8. He had told The Dark Lord about The Prophesy because than he was a Death Eater. But he had turned (look point 1. )
9. He had killed Dumbledore. Right , but I belive that Dumbledore ordered him to keep his cover under every circumstances even if it was killing somebody like Dumbledore. Another reason was that he had to do it for not to die himself and Dumbledore knew he is usefull as a spy.
10. Finally, whan he escapes and Harry tries to stop him he could kill Harry in one move. Insteed he gives him advices ...

As to that "He hates Harry Potter".... I start to "do not like" Potter myself. Those"I am so great Wizard... I fought The Dark Lord so many times.... And they just do not want me to help them..." of him makes me mad. Stupid little boy who thinks that he is so great.*Slytherin Smile*

That's what I am thinking...
SEVERUS SNAPE IS NOT EVIL.

Hello!

I thought I'd drop is, as another fellow whysnape forum-mate. I like your defence on Snape, and would like to comment that the reasons Snape-haters made why they think he's evil are pretty lame.

Your photos are beautiful. It must be great to live in a beautiful place.

Thank You !!! I am really glad !!! In fact I like my country but... I would like to live in Scotland... That's my dream country....
And you are right ! They are lame ;-)

I love my place too. It's very hilly and rugged. It's pretty dangerous during the monsoon with lots of landslides, but it's beautiful. If Japan wasn't always shaken by earthquakes, that's my dream place ;-)

Yes Martha,

you have a point, or rather, lots of points re Snape. I have been thinking along similar lines myself. Doesn't he save, or try to save, Harry at least once in every book, except no 3? And in film no 3, he tries to protect all three children when the werewolf (Lupin) is near. In book 1, Snape saves Harry during the Quidditch match when Quirrel tries to kill him. In book 2, in the duelling scene, Snape tries to protect Harry from the snake (before Snape realizes this is superfluous, as Harry can speak to the snake and thus render it harmless). In book 4, Snape, with two colleagues, rescues Harry at the last moment before Crouch Jr. is going to kill him. In book 5, Snape alerts his friends in the Order to the fact that Harry and others are at the Ministry of Magic, so his life, and the lives of others, too, are saved. Also, in that book Snape gives Umbridge some fake Veritaserum. It seems she tries to make Harry drink it; he is suspicious, however, and doesn't actually touch it. (Because of Snape, it might be plain water.)Had he actually drunk it, he might have been in for more torture at least, at the hands of Umbridge. And during the duel between Snape and Harry in book 6, as you point out, Snape tries to teach Harry what he needs in order to survive. Deflecting all Harry's hexes, Snape nevertheless doesn't harm or kill or stun or petrify Harry. Snape SAYS horrible things to Harry, but Snape's bark is worse than his bite, and his attitude to Harry is parental/paternal (dare it be said, almost maternal?).
Also, as you imply, we see Snape from Harry's point of view, and therefore assume that when Snape accuses Harry of being arrogant, a rule-breaker, and so forth, this is just Snape being difficult as usual. But as a matter of fact he's quite right: Harry IS arrogant, he IS a rule-breaker. (Though Snape accusing Harry of arrogance is really a case of the pot calling the kettle black.)
I have gone on thinking that Snape and Harry have an awful lot in common -- this may contribute, a little ironically, to their hating each other.

Best,

Susanna

Hi Martha,
another forum mate dropping in. Your photographs convinced me, nothing will stop me from visiting Poland next year. Your students really should be done with their exams by now and leave their teacher to a well deserved holiday. We're still missing you :-( .
Some of us are feverishly keeping up Slytherin Pride, overdoing it a bit probably, just a little bit. We could do with your support, as does our temporarily suspended Head of House, you know what I mean.
Hoping to see you soon at whysnape
